Troubador Music once again held a Blues Jam on February 24th and 25th. The studio was packed with participants and spectators alike and the staff and I was so pleased of the incredible turn out.

Troubador Music is different than most studios, because we like to take what is being taught in the private lesson and apply it to a group situation. We decided on the blues idiom because it is a great way to teach music theory and we could create small groups so everyone would get a chance to solo – and they did.

“Do I really need to learn to read music?” My students ask this of me time and time again. The other thing told to me is: "I play by ear and I can play anything so I don't need to know how to read." Oh the humanity! Can you remember everything told to you? Of course not. How many times have you had to say, "I need to write this down or I'll forget It.” or “Wait, that's too much information, please write it down.” It's the same way with music. I can't remember every song I have ever played, but I can instantly recall it (depending on how hard the piece is, sometimes having to woodshed to get it back under my fingers) if it's notated. Once you learn how to read music, it is actually faster to read through your musical charts rather than listening and memorizing.
